Grove Winery is recognized as one of the most awarded wineries and estate vineyards on the East Coast.

European grapes are dry farmed and used for a limited production of about 3100 cases of premium

wine each year. We grow more than 80% of the grapes we use each year here at our estate vineyards

which were first planted in 2002. Grapes we grow here include Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese,

Nebbiolo, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Traminette, and Tempranillo.

A short drive from anywhere in the Triad or Triangle, our tasting room is located at the winery

and is open daily year-round for tastings, shopping, picnics, special events or simply a glass of

wine on our patio overlooking Lake Cabernet.

Our History

In 1992, Max Lloyd, a high-tech entrepreneur fell in love with fine wine while staying in Sonoma

on business. His father and both grandfathers had made homemade wine and his family had always

been into gardening and cooking, but this was his first experience with world-class European-style

wine. The following April, in 1993, Max planted 220 Cabernet Sauvignon vines on family land near

Smith Mountain, Virginia and began growing commercial wine grapes part-time. Over the years,

additional land was acquired and additional vineyards were planted.

Since then Max has judged wine competitions, extensively toured many of the world’s better wine

regions, and taught a number of wine and grape themed classes. His writing and comments have

appeared in a number of industry publications including Wine Business Monthly and Small Winery

Magazine. A successful serial entrepreneur, he along with his wife Denise own Grove Winery.

In 2001 the decision was made to start a winery and after searching dozens of pieces of land, the

Grove farm was purchased. Grapes were originally planted on the estate vineyards on April 6, 2002.

Grove Winery, LLC was bonded by the Federal Government on 9/3/2004. In the fall of 2006, the 2005

Grove Estate Merlot won Grove's first Gold Medal.

In 2002, Dick Carstens came on board as Vineyard Manager. Dick now has more than a decade of

experience managing multiple vinifera vineyards year-round. Since 2005, wines made by Grove Winery

from locally grown grapes have won more than 200 medals in local and international competitions.

Open DailyGrove Winery specializes in growing and crafting exceptional European-style wines. The main estate

vineyards, winery, event facilities and tasting room are located just 7 miles northeast of the

Greensboro city limits in the the federally recognized Haw River Valley wine country, a short

drive from anywhere in the Triad or Triangle.

The sloping, mineral-rich estate vineyards feature wine grapes that thrive in this microclimate

like Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Tempranillo,

etc. Grapes are hand harvested and used for a limited production of 3000 cases of premium wine

each year. The Grove tasting room is open noon - 6 pm daily for tasting, shopping or simply a

glass of wine on our patio overlooking Lake Cabernet.

Our standard tasting is available noon-6 pm daily for $7 and includes six wines from our daily tasting sheet. No reservations are

needed for parties of less than ten.
