Four miles southeast of Surry Community College in the Copeland Community is one of the first vineyards in the area to incorporate the open lyre trellis system. Two white varieties are grown in the three acre vineyard established in 2005. Fruit from the Viognier vines have produced wines at Daveste Winery in 2008-2009; at Stony Knoll Winery in 2008 and Rag Apple Lassie in 2009. The Petit Manseng produced an excellent varietal at Surry Cellars in 2008; a late harvest desert wine at Stony Knoll Winery in 2008 and the 2009 crop is a blend component at Raffaldini Winery.
The Crater farms were farmed by five generations with the primary crops being tobacco, corn, grain, cattle and chickens. The current vineyard site sits at an elevation of approximately 1150 feet and has both east and west facing slopes. Springs from the property feed ponds which later drain into Buck Shoals Creek. The winery construction was completed in August 2004 and commenced crushing and winemaking for the 2004 harvest. Great large covered back deck and front porch for customers pleasure. Gift shop and tasting room.
Founded in 2004, Childress Vineyards is one of North Carolina’s most visible wineries in a re-emerging wine industry that has grown from 21 to more than 60 wineries since 2000.
