Stretching from the southern border of Virginia to the northern border of Georgia, the Mountain Region of North Carolina is home to vineyards and wineries that prefer to grow grapes that do well at higher elevations.

Beaverdam Vineyard

Beaverdam Vineyard and future Winery was recently formed in 2010. The owners have been involved in vineyard restoration of established Norton grapes and establishment of an expanded set of new varietals currently Seyval Blance , Dornfelder and a NYS hybrid (muscat). We are working to create a suite of varietals and begin production and marketing.

Beaverdam Vineyard and Winery is expected to be a boutique vineyard and winery located in Murphy, North Carolina. Our annual goal is to produce, market and sell up to 2,500 gallons of distinctive, quality, wines directly from the winery’s tasting room to progressive wine consumers, and to a lesser extent through selected restaurants and distributors.

Burntshirt Vineyards

All of Burntshirt Vineyards award-winning wines are produced from 100% estate grown grapes from its 25 acres of family-owned vineyards which are among the highest elevations in the state.

BurntshirtVineyardsMtnThe high altitude, long sunny days and cool nights allow Burntshirt Vineyards to grow some European varietals rarely produced in the United States. Besides Grüner Veltliner, a grape most commonly grown in Austria, Burntshirt Vineyards also offers a Riesling, two Chardonnays (oaked and unoaked), Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon, Vidal Blanc and a red wine blend called “Altitude 3400,” which is named for the altitude above sea level of Burntshirt Mountain upon which 6 acres of grapes are planted. The remaining 19 acres of vineyard land is across from the Tasting Room in Hendersonville, NC.

Burntshirt Vineyards officially opened the doors to its Tasting Room on September 15, making it the state’s 114th winery. The vineyards were planted in 2009. To celebrate their opening and the success in their wines in awards competitions from the outset, owners Lemuel and Sandra Oates and their family paid homage to the legend of Burntshirt Mountain for which their winery is named. Mountain lore has it that farmers burning their fields on top of Burntshirt Mountain tossed their shirts in the fire for good luck, thus yielding a bountiful crop. So, the Oates lit a bonfire and set a shirt on fire for continuing good luck too, which has produced more awards for all of their wines.

The Tasting Room hours of operation are Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 12-6 p.m. and from 12-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tours will be conducted during operating hours at 2 p.m. or by appointment. Group tours may be scheduled in advance.

Belle Nicho Winery

purple dog wineryBelle Nicho Winery is a small farm vineyard and winery located in the foothills of North Carolina in McDowell County. We are growing small quantities of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, but our focus is on French-American hybrids such as Seyval Blanc and Isabella, as well as the native Cynthiana (also called Norton).
We source other grapes and wines from professional vineyards to supplement our vineyard's production. Our vineyard uses only organic practices and products for soil amendments and bug/disease management. We also irrigate the vineyard from two 2500 gallon rain water cisterns and capture power from the sun with a 4.95 kW solar panel system. We hope to have our wines available and the tasting room open in the fall of 2013.
